高民栋终于可以歇歇了，医院放了他一个星期的假。
“他在国内时已经是南京人民医院开心脏瓣膜手术的数一数二的医生，还是全国青年新长征突击手，”记得他太太曾自豪又得意地告诉我。
来美国后，尽管有心脏手术的履历，但美国成为一名心脏手术医生除了要通过 MD BOARD的考试，通过以后还要临床5年心脏手术专科的训练实习，关键是还得有教授愿意带教你。
再加已有家庭和孩子， 高民栋就考虑改申请麻醉科，当上了一名麻醉师，实习对他来说很轻松，很顺利就完成, 结业。来医院由于有心脏手术的背景，就当上了心脏手术科的麻醉师。
麻醉师在手术室里的工作就是手术医生的助手，负责手术全过程病人的麻醉。如果病人需要上人工呼吸器，他就要插气管，麻醉，操作呼吸器。
平时心脏手术医生一天一般2 台手术，最多3台，对他来说驾轻就熟，手术完了在病房值班。
高民栋工作认真，训练有素，非常敬业，体格健韧，节日周末还经常顶班，太太抱怨，可科里同事还真离不开他。
3月份新冠病毒的疫情在美国开始蔓延，人们还没缓过神来，2月份不是还在中国武汉吗，这个病毒神不知鬼不觉地已来到了身边。医院好像也还没有准备好，其实谁都还没准备好。到了下旬医院病人突然开始增加，救护车不断地停在了急诊室门口，医院按照指令停止一切不必要的手术，包括心脏手术。高医生待命on call。
“Dr Gao, ER is calling , they need you!!!"
“明栋昨晚没回来，护士说，等他空下来会给你回电，也不见有回音。”他太太焦虑地给我留下了微信。
医院ER现在是什麽情况？ "Tary, Dr Gao is there? may I Talk to him?"，
“he is busy with patient ，intubation intubation......" 嘟嘟嘟电话断了。 情况不太妙啊。
下午我的手机响了起来。
"Can you come to ER? Dr Gao need you right now "
护士已在ER门口等着，手里捧着给我的防护面罩，口罩，gown......我边穿边问，
"what's the situation going on?"
"Since morning,The patient entered the emergency room never stop! half of the cases required immediate Intubation and respiratory support."
"unfortunately, Dr. John began to feel unwell in the morning, and the chief of the ER also had a fever! Only Dr. Gao had been Intubation the patient,"
"He said to call you because he should put on the ventilator immediately after inserting the trachea, but these patients are currently unable to be anesthetized, and they have cough and sputum. He is not sure what precisely ventilator setting is should for these patients."
After fully armed, I pushed open the door and saw that all patient's bed was full.
Dr Gao is kneeling on the ground to examine the patient on the stretcher, preparing for intubation,
Seeing me, he blinked deliberately and started working again。
When I saw sputum and blood stains on his protective gown and no goggle were on, I was shocked that he will be killed by Coronavirus.
I greeted the nurse to help changing his protective gown, mask, goggle ......
"ER has run out and is still waiting for the delivery department" the nurse said helplessly
According to the "one-off" requirement, it seems that the hospital's epidemic protection equipment is simply not enough at all。
“This is dancing with the virus, isn't it!”

4月下旬，我接到高医生太太的短信，她说总算病人少下来了，高民栋可以调班在家歇一歇，
我说，他人怎么样？还是一副钢筋铁骨？炖点鸡汤给他补补吧，疫情还没完呢。
我真有点暗暗佩服高民栋，刀枪不入的金刚身，想起那年一起去南极，在一个火山海湾 ，他竟跟着几个老美纵身跳入海里，还说水是暖的，一点不冷！
